Henry Parkman Sturgis


Henry Parkman Sturgis (1 March 1847 – 1 March 1929) was an American-born banker in England and a Liberal politician.

Sturgis was born in the United States, the son of Russell Sturgis (later of 17 Carlton House Terrace, London, and Givons Grove, Leatherhead) and his third wife, Julia Boit. He was educated at Eton and at Christ Church, Oxford. He was a partner in Baring Bros. & Co. of Liverpool and was a director of London and Westminster Bank.

In the 1885 general election, Sturgis was elected Member of Parliament for South Dorset but lost the seat in the 1886 general election. He was High Sheriff of the County of London in 1896.

Sturgis married the Hon. Mary Cecilia Brand daughter of Henry Brand, 1st Viscount Hampden in 1872. Mary Cecilia Brand Sturgis died on 20 June 1886. On 17 July 1896 Henry Parkman Sturgis married Marie "Mariette" Eveleen Meredith, the daughter of the novelist George Meredith.

Henry Parkman Sturgis (1847–1929) was named after his uncle, Henry Parkman Sturgis (1806–1869), who with his brother Russell Sturgis (1805–1887) made a fortune from the Manila-based mercantile house Russell & Sturgis founded with George Robertson Russell. Henry Parkman Sturgis (1806–1869) was a made a knight of the order of Carlos III. of Spain.
