Havidán Rodríguez (born February 24, 1959), who obtained his Ph.D. in Sociology from the University of Wisconsin-Madison, has had a distinguished career in educational leadership, teaching, research, and community service. He is currently founding Provost and Executive Vice President for Academic Affairs at The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley (UTRGV), and Professor of Sociology. Prior to this position, he served as President ad Interim of The University of Texas–Pan American (UTPA), after serving as Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs at UTPA. Before his arrival to UTPA, Rodríguez was the Deputy Provost at University of Delaware, where he also was a professor in the Department of Sociology and Criminal Justice; and former Director of the Disaster Research Center, the oldest and one of the leading social science disaster research centers in the world.
Rodríguez's recent honors and awards include the 2016 Cesar Estrada Chavez Award by the American Association for Access, Equity and Diversity; the 2015 Alfredo G. de los Santos, Jr. Distinguished Leadership Award by the American Association for Hispanics in Higher Education; being the featured cover story of the June 2015 issue of The Hispanic Outlook in Higher Education; and being highlighted in the September 2015 Bright Spots in Hispanic Education on-line catalogue, by the White House Initiative on Educational Excellence for Hispanics; among others.
One of Rodríguez's major faculty-related programmatic achievements at UTRGV/UTPA has been as Principal Investigator on the ADVANCE Program on Attracting and Nurturing Women at a Hispanic-Serving Institution, funded by the National Science Foundation through an ADVANCE Institutional Transformation grant. The lead Co-PI and Project Director on the UTRGV ADVANCE Program is Ala Qubbaj, Vice Provost for Faculty Affairs & Diversity. This Program has a series of integrated components and initiatives related to faculty recruitment, retention, and advancement, including the ADVANCE Leadership Institute, and the ADVANCE Associate to Full Professor Program. Under the Education & Empowerment Component of ADVANCE, the UTRGV/UTPA Women's Faculty Network was launched, which has since inspired a similar network at The University of Texas Arlington.
