It is an open University of Applied Sciences, owned by a foundation run by Helsinki's business community. This Institution is fully supervised and accredited by the Finnish government through the Ministry of Education and Culture. The school's primary facilities are in Pasila, Helsinki. It has other premises in Haaga, Malmi (all in Helsinki), and in Porvoo and Vierumäki.

It has about 10,500 students and about 630 employee, of whom nearly 400 are full-time teachers.

Haaga-Helia is a valued partner in research, development and innovation (RDI) activities among domestic and international collaborators. We aim to support and guide project activities and funding applications. Furthermore, we emphasize utilization and commercialization of project results.

The concrete business and development-oriented projects are implemented for example in the following fields: regional development, vocational teacher education, staff development, business and sales, sport and health, tourism, hospitality and restaurant business, development of education, Information technology, RDI development, networking, entrepreneurship, and business co-operation.

Projects can be divided in four focus areas depending on their contents and emphasis: new solutions of services and sales, new solutions of the learning, new solutions of entrepreneurship and digital business, and other strategic projects.
