Gwen Hotchkiss is a fictional character and the main antagonist on the NBC/DirecTV soap opera Passions. Introduced in the soap's debut episode, Gwen is portrayed by both Liza Huber (July 5, 1999 to November 8, 2000, then October 16, 2002 to August 7, 2008) and Natalie Zea (November 15, 2000 to October 3, 2002). Gwen, a businesswoman and socialite, is a member of the wealthy Hotchkiss family and has dated attorney and Crane heir Ethan Crane for thirteen years when he ends their relationship the night before their wedding in 2000 in order to marry Gwen's friend and the Crane family housekeeper's daughter, Theresa Lopez-Fitzgerald. Aside from a few brief interludes, Gwen and Theresa are at each other's throats for the remainder of the series and battle back and forth for Ethan's love, alternately marrying him and bearing his children. Gwen is Ethan's wife for much of the program—they are married on December 19, 2002, only to find out in the series finale that Gwen drunkenly married another man in Las Vegas, Nevada before she and Ethan were married—and they share a stillborn daughter, born in October 2003, and a son, born in May 2007.
Born in Harmony, Gwen grew up in a small town outside of Harmony as the only child of Jonathan and Rebecca Hotchkiss. Gwen spent most of her life trying to prove to her father that she was just as good as the son that he never had.
At the age of twelve, Gwen met Ethan Crane at a mixer that their boarding schools had, and became fast friends, soon boyfriend and girlfriend. They later went on to attend Choate.
