Griswold is a town in New London County, Connecticut, United States. The population was 11,951 at the 2010 census. Griswold contains one borough, Jewett City, and also contains the villages of Doaneville, Rixtown, Glasgo, Hopeville, and Pachaug. The town was named after Governor Roger Griswold.
According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 37.1 square miles (96.0 km2), of which 34.7 square miles (89.9 km2) is land and 2.4 square miles (6.1 km2), or 6.37%, is water.
As of the census of 2010, there were 11,951 people, 4,646 households, and 3,225 families residing in the town. The population density was 344.4 people per square mile (132.9/km²). There were 5,118 housing units at an average density of 147.5 per square mile (56.9/km²). The racial makeup of the town was 91.6% White, 1.8% African American, 0.9% Native American, 2.2% Asian, 0.03% Pacific Islander, 0.6% some other race, and 2.8% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 3.3% of the population.
There were 4,646 households, out of which 31.3% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 50.3% were headed by married couples living together, 12.5% had a female householder with no husband present, and 30.6% were non-families. 23.3% of all households were made up of individuals, and 7.4% were someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.57 and the average family size was 3.00.
