Green Tree Mall is a shopping mall located in Clarksville, Indiana. The mall is located off of I-65 about four miles (6 km) north of downtown Louisville. It has a total area of 795,382 square feet (73,893 m2). It was named for a large boundary tree of considerable age that once stood at the location. Currently, there are more than 80 inline stores and 3 major anchor stores (Dillard's, JCPenney, Sears). The mall is managed by CBL & Associates Properties, who bought it from Macerich in 2013.
Built in 1968 along what was then McCulloch Pike, on ground that had for years been a cornfield, it became the catalyst for Clarksville's northern growth, as developers saw building at Green Tree and the surrounding area preferable than building two different stores in New Albany and Jeffersonville.
JCPenney and Sears were the initial anchor stores, with the mall laying entirely between the two stores. A 5 & 10, Danners, was also a prominent initial draw. JCPenney and Sears are still at their original locations, and Dillard's anchors the back annex. This Dillard's was originally Ben Snyder's and later Hess's. The main entrance was built in 1980 during a 22,000 sq ft (2,000 m2). expansion on the mall. The first Texas Roadhouse opened in 1993 at the mall and is still located at the mall.
The mall was owned by Santa Monica, California company Macerich until June 2013. Macerich acquired the property in 1975 and acquired the Green Tree East area in 1989, which now has Burlington Coat Factory, T.J. Maxx, Fazoli's, Burger King and Arby's.
