The Government Film & Television Institute, Bangalore (formerly a part of S.J.Polytechnic) is believed as the first government institute in India to start technical courses related to films. It is one of the few government film institutes in India. The institute is located at Hesaraghatta, Bengaluru in Karnataka. It comes under the Directorate of Technical Education, Government of Karnataka. The institute offers three-year diploma courses in Cinematography and Sound Recording and Engineering. The diploma certificates are awarded by the Department of Technical Education, Government of Karnataka.

It was the vision of a great visionary M. Visvesvaraya to provide trained Technicians to the industries that were developing rapidly in pre- independence India. In August 1943,S.J.Occupational Institute named after the then Maharaja of Mysore, was started by Sir M.Visveswaraya to give training to Technicians in specialized subjects like Ceramics, Instrument technology Boilers and Engines Welding and Sheet Metal, Cinematography, Sound Engg, Radio Engg. It was a Unique Institute, the first of its kind in the country. In September 1996, two specialized courses Cinematography and Sound&Television were separated and a new Institute-Government Film& Television Institute was started at Hesaraghatta, under the World Bank Assisted Project for Technician Development in India.

The Govt. Film & TV Institute is situated in Hesaraghatta about 35 km from the city, over an area of 25 acres amidst sylvan surroundings. The Institute is housed in well designed beautiful buildings and the ambience exuded by the Institute is designed to trigger and promote creativity to meet the burgeoning needs of the Film & Media Industries.

Government Film & Television Institute offers two 3 year Diploma courses in Cinematography and Sound Recording & Engg. The intake of students for each course is 33.

The 3-year study in Cinematography covers Still Photography, Motion Picture Photography and Videography with subjects like Film Analysis & Appreciation, Visual Composition, Filming Techniques, Lighting Techniques, Film Processing, Film Projection, Electronic Cinematography, Television Production, Multimedia, Computer Graphics & Animation.

Cinematography Department has two professionally designed Still Photography Studios, Motion Picture Labs, Television Production Floor and an acoustically treated Film Shooting Floor with a viewers gallery.

Sound Recording & Engg course covers study of Sound Recording Techniques, Architectural Acoustics, Digital Recording, Music, and subjects pertaining to Electronics like Analog& Digital Electronics, Communication Engg, Television Engg. A few subjects are common to both the courses.
