Gita Gopinath (born December 8, 1971) is a professor at the economics department of Harvard University and the Financial advisor to the Chief Minister of Kerala. She has done work on price setting across currencies and the sovereign debt defaults in Europe.

Gita was born in Mysore, India in 1971, and spent her childhood there. Her father, T.V. Gopinath is a farmer and entrepreneur from Kannur district, Kerala who settled in Mysore. Her mother is a homemaker who hails from the Thammangadan Nambiar Family (The Vediyara Chandrothu Tharavadu - a sub-branch of the Kolathiri Family), which has its origins in Kannur, Wayanad and Thiruvananthapuram districts of Kerala. Her husband and former classmate Iqbal Singh Dhaliwal is a director of policy at Abdul Latif Jameel Poverty Action Lab at Department of Economics, Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

Gita lives in with her husband and her son in Weston, Massachusetts.

Gita holds a B.A. from Lady Shriram College, University of Delhi (1992), M.A. from the Delhi School of Economics (1994). She completed her M.A. from the University of Washington (1996). In 2001, she completed her Ph.D from Princeton University, under supervision of Kenneth Rogoff and Pierre-Olivier Gourinchas (). While at Princeton, she was a recipient of the prestigious Woodrow Wilson Fellowship. In 2011, she was chosen as one of the Young Global Leaders by the World Economic Forum.
