Shengelia Graduated from United Military Academy of the Ministry of Defense of Georgia as a Mechanized Infantry Staff Officer(1995-1999). In 2000, he has completed Airborne Training in Bolnisi, Georgia, 2001 was graduated from the U.S. Army John F. Kennedy Special Warfare Center and School as a Special Forces Detachment Officer (2E-18A), known informally as the Q Course..
He accomplish several courses such Live Fire Management Course, BMATT in Viskov, Czech Republic; Peace Support Operations Officers Advance Course, Kilkis Greece; Surviving Hostile Regions Training Course, AKE Ltd, Hereford, UK; EU Concept Core Course XII on Civilian Crisis Management, CMC, Kuopio, Finland; Hostile Environment Security Training (HEST) and Advance Recovery Training HART Security Ltd, UK; Field Security Training, United Nations Training Center of the Bundeswehr, Hammelburg, Germany.
In 2013, he graduated from U. S. Marine Corps University (Quantico, Virginia), Command and Staff College, and in 2016 National Defense University (Washington, D.C), College of International Security Affairs-Counterterrorism Fellowship Program. He holds a BA in History from the United Military Academy of Ministry of Defense of Georgia and a MA in Strategic Security Studies from the National Defense University, Washington, D.C..
Shengelia's assignments include: Mechanized Platoon Leader at the United Military Academy, Executive Officer of Platoon Leaders Course at The Military Academy. While with Special Forces Brigade as a Special Forces Team Leader (Long Range Reconnaissance Battalion) and later as Operations and Training (S3) Officer he participated in various operations in Pankisi Gorge and Upper Abkhazia. In 2003, He Commanded 13th "Shavnabada" Light Infantry Battalion, which went through US lead Georgia Train and Equip Program, including combat operations in Tskhinvali Region (Tsveriakho) in 2004, later Battalion under his command participated in Operation Iraqi Freedom (OIF). During deployment in Iraq, his one of platoon leaders, Lieutenant Misha Kutateladze was severely wounded in IED attack. After seven months deployment of 13th "Shavnabada" Light Infantry Battalion Shengelia was awarded the Bronze Star Medal by the US Ambassador John F. Tefft and President Mikhail Saakashvili.
