Gilchrist County is a rural county located in the U.S. state of Florida. As of the 2010 census, the population was 16,939. The county seat is Trenton.

Gilchrist County is included in the Gainesville, FL Metropolitan Statistical Area.

Gilchrist County was created in 1925, making it the youngest county in Florida. It was named for Albert W. Gilchrist, Governor of Florida from 1909 to 1913.

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the county has a total area of 355 square miles (920 km2), of which 350 square miles (910 km2) is land and 5.6 square miles (15 km2) (1.6%) is water. It is the fifth-smallest county in Florida by land area and fourth-smallest by total area.

As of the census of 2000, there were 14,437 people, 5,021 households, and 3,715 families residing in the county. The population density was 41 people per square mile (16/km²). There were 5,906 housing units at an average density of 17 per square mile (7/km²). The racial makeup of the county was 90.52% White, 7.00% Black or African American, 0.37% Native American, 0.17% Asian, 0.01% Pacific Islander, 0.69% from other races, and 1.26% from two or more races. 2.80% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.
