GSC Game World is a Ukrainian video game developer based in Kiev, Ukraine. Founded in 1995 by Sergey Grigorovich, it is best known for the Cossacks and S.T.A.L.K.E.R. series of games. Their first game was the 2000 Cossacks: European Wars, which directly led to their breakthrough. In 2004, GSC Game World opened their publishing arm, GSC World Publishing, which would publish and distribute their titles in the Commonwealth of Independent States. Their next successful series, S.T.A.L.K.E.R., started with S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Shadow of Chernobyl on 20 March 2007, and was followed up with two sequels in 2008 and 2009, respectively. In September 2009, they announced that the S.T.A.L.K.E.R. series would be ported to Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3, however, due to a lack of manpower, they instead shifted to the development of S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2, which later got stuck in development hell.

On 9 December 2011, GSC Game World was officially dissolved, and, in March 2012, a new studio, Vostok Games, was opened by former GSC Game World staff to produce a free-to-play first-person shooter, which would later become Survarium. In June 2012, a controversial new studio, Union Studio, was formed, which falsely claimed to employ former S.T.A.L.K.E.R. developers. The studio renamed itself to West-Games and opened a Kickstarter campaign, looking for US$50,000 to produce Areal, a spiritual successor to the S.T.A.L.K.E.R. series. After reaching US$64,928, two weeks before the funding closed, the campaign was suspended by Kickstarter, stating contract violation. It was later revealed that West-Games acted out fraud, having employed no former GSC Game World staff and tried to crowdfund a now cancelled Adobe Flash game. On 22 December 2014, GSC Game World officially reopened and picked up development on a new game.
