Foster Township is a township in Luzerne County, Pennsylvania, United States. The population was 3,467 at the 2010 census. It was first settled in 1824 by John Lines and incorporated as a township in 1855.
The Eckley Historic District was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1971.
According to the United States Census Bureau, the township has a total area of 45.2 square miles (117.0 km2), of which 44.9 square miles (116.2 km2) is land and 0.27 square miles (0.7 km2), or 0.63%, is water. It contains the census-designated place of Hickory Hills.
As of the census of 2000, there were 3,323 people, 1,268 households, and 882 families residing in the township. The population density was 74.1 people per square mile (28.6/km2). There were 1,657 housing units at an average density of 37.0/sq mi (14.3/km2). The racial makeup of the township was 98.13% White, 1.11% African American, 0.03% Native American, 0.24% Asian, 0.21% from other races, and 0.27% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.78% of the population.
There were 1,268 households, out of which 26.8% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 55.8% were married couples living together, 8.8% had a female householder with no husband present, and 30.4% were non-families. 27.1% of all households were made up of individuals, and 13.6% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.40 and the average family size was 2.92.
