The flag of Saxony-Anhalt has two major variants. The civil flag is a yellow and black bi-color in the traditional colors of the Prussian Province of Saxony, except they are inverted from the historical flag. Since 1953, the German state of Baden-Württemberg had been using a bi-color of black over yellow. The state flag, is for official use by the state government. It is the same yellow and black bi-color except with the state's coat of arms centered on the flag.

In 1947, the state of Saxony-Anhalt was created in East Germany. It adopted a flag similar to that of Baden-Württemberg. In 1952, the various states were dissolved during reform in East Germany. After the fall of the Berlin Wall, Saxony-Anhalt was re-established as a state in October 1990. To differentiate its flag from Baden-Württemberg, the Saxony-Anhalt flag was, on 29 January 1991, established as yellow over black in its design. This was then enshrined in the state constitution of 17 July 1992, where Article 1 deals with the state symbols.
