Essex Township is a civil township of Clinton County in the U.S. state of Michigan. The population was 1,910 at the 2010 census.
The Olympic 110-meter hurdles gold medalist William Porter was born in Essex Township.
Essex Township is located in northern Clinton County and is bordered to the north by Gratiot County. According to the United States Census Bureau, the township has a total area of 35.6 square miles (92.2 km2), of which 35.4 square miles (91.6 km2) is land and 0.23 square miles (0.6 km2), or 0.68%, is water. The Maple River, a tributary of the Grand River, flows across the northwest corner of the township, past the village of Maple Rapids.
As of the census of 2000, there were 1,812 people, 635 households, and 509 families residing in the township. The population density was 50.9 per square mile (19.7/km²). There were 659 housing units at an average density of 18.5 per square mile (7.1/km²). The racial makeup of the township was 98.95% White, 0.11% African American, 0.28% Native American, 0.06% Asian, 0.06% Pacific Islander, 0.33% from other races, and 0.22% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.16% of the population.
