Eric Chen

Eric Chen is an Associate Professor and Counseling Psychologist of the graduate school of education at Fordham University.

Chen was born and raised in Taiwan, and graduated from Taiwan Normal University in Taipei, Taiwan with a Bachelors of Arts degree in Chinese, in 1987. Chen worked as a youth counselor in a high school in Taipei, Taiwan, and the experience taught him two things. The first was that he enjoyed the counseling experience and wanted to pursue his master's degree in counseling psychology. The second was that he found himself connecting with the youth he worked with whom struggled with their LGBTQ identity and societal expectations of marriage in Taiwan, and so he decided to apply to masters counseling programs in America. In 1991, Chen accepted the invitation to attend the University of Oregon, and graduated with a master's degree in Counseling Psychology. Chen continued his education, and applied to doctorate programs. From 1994-1995 Chen took part in a Pre-doctoral internship at The University of Texas at Austin in a Counseling and Mental Health Center, and by 1995, Chen graduated with a PhD from Arizona State University in Counseling Psychology.

After receiving his Ph.D., in 1995, Chen accepted a teaching position at Fordham University, and additionally served as the Psychological and educational services division of the Graduate School of Education’s Chair from 2003 to 2006. Chen’s personal philosophy is, “Anything is worth trying at least once,” which has influenced him to accept and experience numerous roles at Fordham University. From 2010-2012 he served as the Training Director of the PhD Counseling Psychology program, he also served on the editorial board of several journals, including the Journal of Counseling Psychology (2002-2009), and the Journal of Group Dynamics: Theory, Research, and Practice which he served as an Associate Editor (2007-2010). Chen continues to teach Masters and PhD level courses in counseling psychology.
