The village lies partially within Pipestone Township and partially within Berrien Charter Township.

Eau Claire was established in 1850.
The correct French pronunciation is Eau (pronounced "O") Claire. However, many local residents pronounce the city's name "Aw Claire". Variations in pronunciation are common.
