Drunk Mode is a mobile app that provides functions to use while the user is intoxicated.
The Drunk Mode app was created by Joshua Anton at the University of Virginia after encountering a problem with someone calling him while intoxicated. The following day he began market research on whether or not college students would purchase an app that prevented them from making such calls. The app was then developed and officially launched in April 2013, with an initial target userbase of college students.
The app has several functions. The first “no more drunk dials” is used to prevent the user from making telephone calls when intoxicated. The second function is entitled “breadcrumbs”, which helps you track where you were over the evening the next day. The third function “find a ride” pairs you with the nearest Uber or Lyft driver available if the user does not have a way of getting home at the end of the evening. This feature also tracks the nearest bus in real time. The final function “find my drunk” allows the user to find their friends via GPS, in case they are lost. The original app only had the first three functions before a 2014 relaunch.
Call blocking can be set for different numbers of hours, from three to twelve, and set for individual contacts instead of for all possible numbers. When this occurs, the app provides a complex math problem for you to solve before it allows you to dial the number; with the idea that if the user is intoxicated, they will be unable to provide the correct answer. Those that the app will block you from calling, or individuals you would like to track over the evening, are newly added into the app each time it is used.
When it was first launched in 2013, the app cost a dollar per download, however upon the advice of venture capitalists Drunk Mode became a free download. Before it became free the app had about ten thousand users, however by November 2014 (after it had become free) the app had about 100,000 users. As of April 2015, the app had 500,000 users.
