Onto-Semiotic is an adjective that characterizes a specific theoretical model of research in Mathematics education called Onto-Semiotic Approach to Mathematical Knowledge and Instruction (OSA). The fundamental principle of the OSA is to advance in the construction of a system of conceptual and methodological tools, that allow analyzing, at macro and micro level, the factors affecting the teaching and learning of mathematics, as well as the interactions between them. This theory was initiated at the University of Granada in the early 1990s, as a result of the interactions between the aforementioned university's researchers and the theoretical developments of the Didactics of mathematics initiated in France.
