Doggy Style Records (formerly known as Dogghouse Records) is an American record label founded by rapper Snoop Dogg in 1995. It is named after Snoop's debut album, Doggystyle.
On July 6, 1995, Doggy Style Records, Inc. was registered with the California Secretary of State as business entity number C1923139. After Snoop Dogg was acquitted of murder charges on February 20, 1996, he and the mother of his son and their kennel of 20 pit bulls moved into a 5,000-square-foot (460 m2) home in the hills of Claremont, California and by August 1996 Doggy Style Records, a subsidiary of Death Row Records, signed The Gap Band's Charlie Wilson as one of the record label's first artists. The record label was founded by Snoop Dogg at the end of his self-described "servitude" at Master P's No Limit Records. The idea of an independent record label came up when Snoop left Death Row earlier than finishing his second album Tha Doggfather. Although completing it by himself and producing the tracks alone, the vision of his own label remained unrealised. Much advertising was done by Snoop in interviews, as well as wearing "Dogghouse-branded" leather jackets and jewelry made in the shape of the Doggy Style Records logo. Finally it was independently founded in late 1999/early 2000. It started as a place to house many artists that had ties with Snoop in the past but were not currently signed to a label, as well as some newcomers. However, Snoop only used the label for his own releases, and as a result many artists left. For a time, though, several former Death Row artists who collaborated with Snoop in the early '90s were signed to the label. Its main purpose is still to endorse all copyrights for the recorded song from then on.
Originally it was distributed through Universal Music Group, the main shareholder of Vivendi Universal SA that embraced MCA Inc. record label the one to release Doggy Style Records as its sub-agency with Snoop being the executive in August 2001. After this in October 2005 Snoop has formed a partnership with Koch Records in preparation for the release of Snoop Dogg Presents Welcome to tha Chuuch - Da Album, as well as other albums.
