Diploma in Engineering

The Diploma in Engineering, also Diploma of Engineering or Diploma in Technical Education are programmes focused on practical and skills-oriented training. It is a technical degree that only covers the essentials when ranked with an undergraduate engineering degree. It aims to provide students with industry or job related engineering knowledge, scientific skills, computing & analysis, mathematical techniques, a sound knowledge of English to communicate in the field and ability to apply problem solving techniques.

Its duration is 2–3 years. Many countries in the world recognize it as equivalent to Pre-Engineering or Bridging course when considered for continuing studies in engineering related bachelors or associate degree programmes. After successful completion of Diploma in Engineering course, students can either continue further Engineering studies in undergraduate level or specialize in certain fields with an advanced diploma. Diploma holders gets employment as technicians, technologists, supervisors, superintendents, foremen, machinist, workshop technicians, draughtsman, station technicians (energy, thermal, aeronautical), automobile technicians, maintenance & service technicians, equipment mechanics and technicians, CAD/CAM programmer, agricultural overseers, instrument technicians, junior instructors, manufacturing, tool and die designers, electricians...etc.

In most of the countries one can apply for studying diploma in engineering degree after completion of 10th grade or after higher secondary school certificate or twelfth grade. Those who have a twelfth grade certificate in PCM require only to complete two years technical training excluding first year physics, chemistry, mathematics inter science level subjects.

Diploma in Engineering degree can be obtained from one of the following disciplines:

and many more engineering, vocational or technical subjects.

In India, a diploma is a specific academic award usually earned in professional/vocational courses, e.g., Engineering, Pharmacy, Design, etc. In such cases, a diploma is lower in rank than a bachelor's degree of that discipline but equivalent to general degree in that discipline, e.g., Diploma in Engineering of Electronics Engineering is rated differently from Bachelor of Technology in Electronics Engineering but is equivalent to Associate degree in Electronics as well. The course structure and syllabus are always comparatively equal with disciplines of engineering studies. Students enter for diploma courses usually after 10 years of school education where it is a 1+2 format, 2 years of technical oriented training whereas those with a physics, chemistry and mathematics background of 12 years education can enter straight into the 2 year technical training via lateral entry. But engineering degree programs require 12 years of schooling and it is in a 1+3 format, i.e. a 3 years of theory focused technical training for post-graduate purposes, scientific posts as well as for entry jobs in technical fields.
