Diana E. Murphy, (born January 4, 1934) is a Senior judge of the United States Court of Appeals for the Eighth Circuit.
Murphy received her Bachelor of Arts from the University of Minnesota in 1954 and her Juris Doctor from the University of Minnesota Law School in 1974, where she was an editor on the Law Review.
She served as a state court judge on the Minnesota District Court, Fourth Judicial District from 1978 to 1980.
Murphy was nominated by Jimmy Carter to be a federal district judge for the United States District Court for the District of Minnesota on November 30, 1979. She was confirmed by the United States Senate on February 20, 1980 and received her commission the same day. She served on the district court until her elevation to the Court of Appeals She served as chief judge of the district court from 1992 to 1994.
Murphy was nominated to be a judge of the United States Court of Appeals for the Eighth Circuit by Bill Clinton on July 28, 1994 and confirmed by the Senate on October 7, 1994. She received her commission on October 11, 1994. While on the Court of Appeals she also served as Chair of the United States Sentencing Commission from 1999 to 2004. She assumed senior status on November 29, 2016. Murphy is the first woman to serve on the Eighth Circuit.
