David Niu (entrepreneur)

David Niu is an American entrepreneur and founder of TINYpulse. Previously, he was co-founder of BuddyTV and NetConversions. He is the author of "Careercation: Trading Briefcase For Suitcase to Find Entrepreneurial Happiness."

Niu’s parents are Taiwanese immigrants. His father was a petroleum engineer and he grew up in Texas and Oklahoma attending high school in Tulsa.

He went to the University of California Berkeley for his undergrad and graduated with Distinction. He then worked for three years at the prestigious Strategic Services group of Andersen Consulting. He received his MBA from The Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania. After graduating from business school, Niu co-founded NetConversions in 1999 which was then sold to aQuantive "AQNT" in 2004. At NetConversions, he rapidly cultivated a rabid client base of Fortune 500 organizations, like American Express, ESPN, and ATT Wireless. After the acquisition, David served as a Vice President at Avenue A | Razorfish, which is a division of aQuantive.

In 2005 he and Andy Liu founded BuddyTV, a website that establishes fan communities based on television-watching habits. At BuddyTV Niu primarily focused on content development, strategy, and monetization. BuddyTV was honored in 2011 with the Inc. 500 award as one of the 500 fastest growing companies in America.

After a decade of charging hard in his career, Niu felt he need a recharge and embarked on what he called a Careercation. He sold all his belongings and brought one-way tickets to New Zealand for himself, his wife and their 10-month-old daughter to travel around the world. From this experience, he wrote the book Careercation: Trading Briefcase for Suitcase to Find Entrepreneurial Happiness. It contains interviews with entrepreneurs and tips and insights on how to create a thriving company culture.

As a result of his careercation, Niu launched his third company TINYhr, a company driven to create products that improve employee happiness worldwide. Its first product, TINYpulse, is an employee engagement survey tool designed to improve employee morale.

Niu was named a “40 Under 40” recipient in the Seattle area, and is actively involved in the Entrepreneurs Organization “EO.” He is frequently asked to speak on topics spanning employee engagement, company culture and organizational morale at top-tier organizations including Amazon, HubSpot and Year Up.
