David Branson Smith (born April 9, 1984) is an American screenwriter. He co-wrote the upcoming comedy-drama film Ingrid Goes West, which premiered at the 2017 Sundance Film Festival and won the Waldo Salt Screenwriting Award.
Smith was born in New York City and raised in Washington, D.C. His mother, Sally Bedell Smith, is a biographer and Vanity Fair contributing editor. His father, Stephen G. Smith, is editor in chief of National Journal. He attended Deerfield Academy and University of Pennsylvania, graduating in 2006 with a B.A. in American History.
Smith worked for Mike White on HBO's Enlightened, for which he also served as associate producer during the show's second season. He has written feature adaptations of Jernigan by David Gates, Herman Melville's Typee, and Brewster by Mark Slouka. Most recently, he was a staff writer on the third season of UnReal.
