Curtis T. Hill Jr. is an American prosecutor who is the 43rd Attorney General of Indiana. He defeated his opponent Lorenzo Arredondo on November 8, 2016, with 61.94% to 38.06% of the vote. The 1,643,689 ballots cast for Hill, a Republican, made him the top vote-getter of any elected official in Indiana history. He took office on January 9, 2017.
Born and raised in Elkhart, Indiana, Hill is the fifth and youngest child of Curtis T. Hill, Sr., and Eleanor M. Hill. After graduating from Elkhart Central High School, he earned both his bachelor’s and law degrees from Indiana University in Bloomington. He began his legal career as a part-time deputy prosecuting attorney for Elkhart County and also maintained a private law practice.
Starting in 2002, Hill was elected to four terms as the Elkhart County prosecutor in Northern Indiana. Early in his tenure, he transformed Indiana’s largest part-time prosecuting attorney’s office into a full-time office. Hill gained a reputation for taking a hard line against criminal defendants, but he also supported creative programs enabling certain defendants charged with less serious and nonviolent crimes to avoid incarceration.
Hill has testified before Congress on “Methamphetamine in the Heartland” and served as a presenter for the Northern Indiana Methamphetamine Summit, sponsored by the Office of National Drug Control Policy, Executive Office of the President of the United States.
Running to become Indiana Attorney General in 2016, Hill pledged to emphasize four priorities – rolling back federal overreach; protecting families from drugs and violent crime; safeguarding consumers from fraud and scams; and inspiring youth to pursue meaningful lives.
Hill and his wife, Teresa, have five children.
He has performed on stage in a variety of local community theater productions, including recurring roles as the king of Siam in “The King and I.” Among some of his other credits, Hill has been cast in “Guys and Dolls,” “Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dream Coat,” “The Jungle Book” and “A Christmas Carol” (in which he portrayed the ghost of Jacob Marley).
