Colin Carr


Colin Carr (born 25 October 1957) is a British cello soloist, chamber musician, recording artist and teacher.

Born in Liverpool, Carr is a professor of the cello, currently at the Royal Academy of Music. Carr taught at the New England Conservatory in Boston for sixteen years before taking up his current job at the Royal Academy of Music. In addition, he is also affiliated with the State University of New York at Stony Brook. Colin is the winner of many prestigious international awards, including First Prize in the Naumburg Competition, the Gregor Piatigorsky Memorial Award, Second Prize in the Rostropovich International Cello Competition and also winner of the Young Concert artists competition.

Carr began playing at the age of five, and studied with Maurice Gendron. He also attended the Yehudi Menuhin School. He formerly played on the 'Marquis de Corberon' Stradivari cello, formerly played by Zara Nelsova, currently played by Steven Isserlis, and owned by the Royal Academy of Music. He lives with his wife Caroline and three children, Clifford, Frankie and Anya in a 17th-century farmhouse outside of Oxford, England.
