Colfax Township is a civil township of Benzie County in the U.S. state of Michigan. The population was 657 at the 2010 census. One half of the village of Thompsonville is located within the township, which is situated in the southeast corner of the county. The census-designated place of Nessen City is located along the southern border of the township.
According to the United States Census Bureau, the township has a total area of 35.9 square miles (93.0 km2), of which 35.6 square miles (92.3 km2) is land and 0.27 square miles (0.7 km2), or 0.72%, is water.
As of the census of 2000, there were 585 people, 224 households, and 170 families residing in the township. The population density was 16.4 per square mile (6.3/km²). There were 297 housing units at an average density of 8.3 per square mile (3.2/km²). The racial makeup of the township was 95.73% White, 0.17% African American, 1.54% Native American, 0.17% Asian, 0.68% from other races, and 1.71% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 2.05% of the population.
There were 224 households out of which 36.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 61.6% were married couples living together, 7.6% had a female householder with no husband present, and 24.1% were non-families. 20.5% of all households were made up of individuals and 6.7% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.61 and the average family size was 3.02.
