Lanier was born in Dallas, Texas. When growing up she studied theater and acting, and found herself an agent in her hometown of Dallas after her high school graduation. She moved to Los Angeles to pursue acting.
She is managed by Untitled Entertainment. She started her acting career in 2009 by starring in a movie called The Effects of Tragedy as Lisa. In 2012, she had joined the cast of Army Wives in the recurring role of Penny. In 2014, she guest-starred in an episode of NCIS as Emma Carter and appeared in a film, North Blvd, as Young Elaine. In 2015, she appeared in two episodes of General Hospital as Young Patricia Spencer for the 52nd anniversary storyline. In the same year, she guest-starred in Stalker as Sage. General Hospital were planning to cast another actress to portray the role of Nelle Hayes, since Lanier was busy with another TV show (Kingdom) at that time, but Laura Wright and Frank Valentini were adamant that if anyone should be playing Nelle it should be Lanier, so the storyline was put on hold for her. In 2016, she returned to General Hospital, but this time in a brand new contract role of Nelle Hayes. She debuted on August 8, 2016. In November 2016, she had booked an independent film, Gorman, where she plays a lead role of Brittany.
