The Chitimukulu is the Paramount Chieftainship of the Bemba, the largest ethnic group in Zambia. The chieftainship is named after Chiti Mukulu (Chiti the Great), who in the 18th Century led the Bemba out from their original lands in the Lunda Empire of Mwata Yamvo in DR Congo to eventually settle the country around Kasama in Zambia's Northern Province.
Following the death of Chitimukulu Chilufya Mwango Chitapankwa III in April 2012, Chief Mwamba, Henry Sosola, assumed the position of Chitimukulu but has not been recognised by Patrotic Front Government of Micheal Chilufya Sata. Eventually creating a standoff between the Bemba Royal Establishment (BRE) and State House. The then Defence Minister Honorable Geoffrey Mwamba Member of Parliament for Kasama Central resigned sighting conflict of interest.
