Chithara is a village in Kollam district in the state of Kerala, India.
As of 2001[update] India census,Chithara had a population of 20694 with 9727 males and 10967 females.
Chithara town is in Mancodu villages. This village has the credit of having elected the first woman Panchayat President in India. Her name was Mrs. Sumathi Sukumaran.It is the nearest place of Madathara.
According to the Literacy Survey conducted as part of the Total Literacy Campaign in 1989, this Panchayat had the largest number of illiterate people in Kollam district. However, as years passed, there has been considerable development in the field of education. Initially, this village had only a Lower Primary and Upper Primary School , both managed by the Government. Later, the SN Trust started a high School at Thumpamaonthodi. Another lower primary school, Al Mina also functioned here.
Chithara town now has many educational establishments,govt offices etc. , Apple Kids International Pre-School, Govt.HSS,Govt LPS, APRM TTI,APRM Central School, Jamia BEd College, Service Cooperative Bank, Govt.LPS, Chithara Juma-Masjid,Sree Krishnan Kovil Temple, KSEB section office, Telephone Exchange, Sub-registrar office, Agriculture office,Thanima Public Library Kizhakkumbhagam like offices are in here, Akshaya Centre, lot of shops,private bank, an hour travel to Trivandrum Airport, 20 Minutes to MC Road.
