In the Chicago mayoral election of 1979, Chicago's first female mayor, Jane Byrne, took office. In the election, Byrne faced Republican nominee Wallace Johnson and Socialist Worker nominee Cleve Andrew Pulley. She won the election with a landslide majority, winning more than 82% of the vote.
