Cecil H. Fox


Cecil Henry Fox, C.B. (27 May 1873 – 1963) was an Officer in the Royal Navy.

He was born 27 May 1873 in Dublin, Ireland, and joined The Navy 15 January 1886 ref National Archives ADM196/43/320. He was promoted to rank of Captain on 31 December 1911.

He was made Captain D of the Third Destroyer Flotilla on 3 April 1913 ref Movements of Ships The Times 28 March 1913 Issue 40171 colE p6 commanding the flotilla from Bodicea and from August of that year from Forward ref www.dreadnoughtproject.org

He was subject of one of the 240 Cinderella Stamps issued for the Lord Roberts Memorial Fund ref Tony Allen www.worldwar1postcards.com

The Biographical notes which accompanied the Stamp say:

Commanded H M S Amphion, which was one of the first ships to sink an enemy vessel, the Konigen Luise, a German Minelayer, on Aug 5th 1914. When the Amphion was sunk by a mine later in the same year. Captain Fox was transferred to the Undaunted and took a prominent part in sinking four German destroyers off the Dutch Coast on Oct 17th 1914. He was also in the Cuxheve raid Dec 16th 1914.

He was buried on 6 April 1963.
