Carthage was platted in 1883. It was named after Carthage, New York.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 1.49 square miles (3.86 km2), of which, 1.46 square miles (3.78 km2) is land and 0.03 square miles (0.08 km2) is water.
