Carl Sargeant AM (born 1968) is a Welsh Labour politician and the Cabinet Secretary for Communities and Children in Welsh Government. Born in St Asaph, Denbighshire, Wales, Sargeant has represented the constituency of Alyn and Deeside since being elected to the National Assembly for Wales in 2003.
Sargeant worked as a Process Operator at Warwick International Limited, a specialist chemical manufacturer, at its Mostyn site. He also contributed as a quality environmental auditor and a member of the site Emergency Response Team. He is a Governor of Deeside College and a trained industrial fire fighter.
He was first elected in the National Assembly for Wales election of 2003, succeeding Tom Middlehurst who stood down.
In the Third Assembly he was appointed Chief Whip of the Labour Group and a Deputy Welsh Minister for Assembly Business in the Welsh Assembly Government (31 May 2007). He retained the position of Labour Chief Whip when the coalition government of Labour and Plaid Cymru was announced on 19 July.
In December 2009 he was handed the position of Minister for Social Justice and Local Government in Carwyn Jones' cabinet. Speaking to the Flintshire Chronicle, Mr. Sargeant said, "I was honoured when our new First Minister, Carwyn Jones, asked me to join his Cabinet and take up the important role of Minister for Social Justice and Local Government. This is the first time a North Walian has held this portfolio, and so I hope to bring my local knowledge to the role and to ensure that the Welsh Assembly Government continues to be visible to people in North Wales".
