The Caritas Hospital is a hospital in Thellakom (near Adichira), Kottayam district, Kerala, India. The hospital is run by the Syro-Malabar Catholic Archeparchy of Kottayam and is registered as a charitable organisation.
Caritas Hospital has grown from a 50-bedded hospital to 635-bedstrength hospital.
In 1962, Mar Thomas Tharayil, Bishop of Kottayam, in collaboration with a select few benevolent German people (of the Caritas organisation) started a health care venture named Caritas after the Catholic organisation Caritas International. The name is derived from the Christian virtue of caritas, or benevolent giving.
THE PAST
In 1962, MAR THOMAS THARAYIL, Bishop of Kottayam, in collaboration with the selected few of German benevolent people started the venture of health care naming it ‘CARITAS’. The word itself adheres to the recommendations of the 1946 Bhore committee report “to ensure medical care for every individual including those who cannot pay for it’’. Inefficiency of the system, deficiency of proper planning, lack of true commitment and above all, wide spread corruption, have led to the deplorable situation that the health mission of ‘CARITAS HOSPITAL’ has to play a vital role in alleviating pain of the sick and the suffering, especially to those who cannot afford adequate treatment. Spread over 25 acres, 4 kilometers from Government Medical College and seven kilometers from Kottayam.
THE PRESENT
The unconditional support and enlightened vision of MAR KURIAKOSE KUNNACHERY, the Bishop of Kottayam, the hospital has grown to a world-class manifold academic and community based hospital that is from a 50-bedded hospital to a 635-bed strength hospital. Footing on the strong guidance of MAR MATHEW MOOLAKKATT, the Archbishop of Kottayam, the hospital is growing to its renowned heights. It now cares more than 3 lakhs OUT PATIENTS and almost 50,000 IN-PATIENTS each year. The hospital has 33 clinics in the Out Patient department and 25 wards in the In Patient department. In addition there is a full-fledged Emergency and Trauma care unit also.
