Cardiff University School of Music


Cardiff University School of Music is the music department of Cardiff University and is located in Cardiff, Wales. It is home to about 240 undergraduate and 40 postgraduate students. It was one of the first departments established when Cardiff University was granted its Royal Charter in 1883. In the 2014 Research Excellence Framework, the School's was ranked 13th in the UK in the category Music, Drama, Dance and Performing Arts. Amongst music departments, The School ranked 2nd in the UK for quality of research environment and 8th in the UK for overall research excellence. The department holds close links with organisations such as BBC National Orchestra of Wales and Welsh National Opera.

The current Head of School is Professor Kenneth Hamilton. Former heads of school include Professor David Wyn Jones, Professor Robin Stowell and Professor Adrian Thomas.

The Director of Postgraduate Studies is Dr Sarah Hill (September 2015-) and the new Director of Undergraduate Studies is Dr Daniel Bickerton (September 2016-). The school also has a deputy head, Dr Clair Rowden (September 2014-). Notable former posts were held by Dr Timothy Taylor who was the Director of Undergraduate Studies from 2008 to 2015 until his retirement. The school is managed by Nichola Amor.

Notable alumni include the internationally acclaimed composer Alun Hoddinott, who was head of the school from 1967 to 1989, composer Karl Jenkins, Tony Woodcock (President of the New England Conservatory), music scholar David Wyn Jones, pianist and accompanist Andrew Matthews-Owen and Emmy-nominated composer Mark Thomas.

The music school is home to numerous ensembles, the largest of these being the University Symphony Orchestra and the University Choral Society. Smaller groups include the University Chamber Orchestra, University Chamber Choir and the Contemporary Music Group.
