In the 2006 state assembly elections, Dwijapada Mondol of CPI(M) won the Canning West (SC) seat defeating his nearest rival, Gobinda Chandra Naskar of Trinamool Congress. In 2001, Gobinda Chandra Naskar representing Congress defeated Bimal Mistry of CPI(M). Contests in most years were multi cornered but only winners and runners are being mentioned. Bimal Mistry of CPI(M) defeated Bhaskar Sinha of Congres in 1996 and 1991. Gobinda Chandra Naskar of Congress defeated Chittaranjan Mirdha of CPI(M) in 1987.
