Cain Zachariah Dingle is a fictional character in the British ITV soap opera Emmerdale. He is played by Jeff Hordley, and made his first appearance on 30 March 2000. Initially Cain was only in the show for a few episodes but returned full-time in early 2001. In 2006, Cain was written out of the series when Hordley left the show; however, the door was left open for a return, which occurred when Hordley returned to the cast in February 2009.
Cain's storylines have focused on his relationships with his cousin Charity Dingle (Emma Atkins), Moira Barton (Natalie J. Robb) amongst others, discovering he is the father of Debbie Dingle (Charley Webb), being attacked in a whodunit storyline where his assailant was eventually revealed to be his father, Zak (Steve Halliwell), being diagnosed with a brain aneurysm and supporting his nephew Aaron Livesy (Danny Miller) after discovering Aaron was sexually abused by his father Gordon Livesy (Gary Mavers) as a child.
Cain arrives for his brother Butch's (Paul Loughran) funeral, blaming police officers Angie Reynolds (Freya Copeland) and Chris Tate (Peter Amory) for his death. Wanting revenge, he seduces Angie's daughter, Ollie (Vicky Binns), and manipulates her into believing that he cares, despite sleeping with her mother. When Angie dumps Cain, he has her fired, has a steamy session with Ollie and pushes Len Reynolds (Peter Martin) down a flight of stairs. Determined to get her own revenge, Angie goes along with Cain's plan to rob a Tate Haulage truck but she sets him up and is fatally injured in a car crash. He begs her to tell him she loves him but she tells him how much she loves her children.
