Adam Barton is a fictional character from the British ITV soap opera, Emmerdale. Portrayed by Adam Thomas, the character first appeared on screen during the episode broadcast on 17 July 2009. Adam is the son of James (Bill Ward) and Moira Barton (Natalie J. Robb), and the half-brother of Ross (Michael Parr), Pete (Anthony Quinlan), Finn (Joe Gill), Holly (Sophie Powles) and Hannah Barton (Grace Cassidy). Originally, Adam believed that his biological father was James' brother John (James Thornton). Adam's storylines have included the break-up of his parents' marriage due to Moira's affair with Cain Dingle (Jeff Hordley), suffering a breakdown and committing arson following the death of his putative father John, discovering John's brother James was his biological father, mistakenly believing he fathered Johnny Woodfield after a paternity test was doctored by Rakesh Kotecha (Pasha Bocarie), the deaths of his half-sister Holly and his biological father James within a month of each other, and his enduring yet quarrelsome friendship with Aaron Dingle (Danny Miller).
