CBM Star of Hope Hospital is a participating hospital of the Council of Christian Hospitals, an autonomous body of the Convention of Baptist Churches of Northern Circars. The CBM Star of Hope Hospital is located in Akiveedu, West Godavari District, Andhra Pradesh, India.
The CBM Star of Hope Hospital was founded by the Canadian Baptist Mission in 1898 due to the initiative of the pioneer Medical Missionaries. The Church Historian, William Gordon Carder, formerly Professor of Church History at the Andhra Christian Theological College, Hyderabad, in Hand to the Indian Plow published in 1976 wrote,
Dr. Pearl Smith-Chute, a graduate of the University of Toronto, moved to Akiveedu. Seeing the lack of medical services and the great need of the people, she began medical work at the mission bungalow in 1896. Then within two years (1898), with Rs.700.00 collected locally, a small hospital building of two rooms was built and named "The Star of Hope". Mission medical services have been carried on ever since in this village.
