Chandra Kant Raut is a Madhesi Nepali computer scientist and an author who has been actively involved in demanding the secession of the Madhesh region from Republic of Nepal. He has been under house-arrest by the Government of Nepal since April.
Dr. Raut was born to an Adivasi Satar (Rajdhob) family in Mahadeva Village, near Koshi Barrage, Bhardah in the Saptari district, Sagarmatha Zone of Nepal. He attended primary school in his home village, and secondary school in nearby Katti . He went on to study at Tribhuvan University (Nepal), Tokyo University (Japan) and Cambridge University (UK). He is a recipient of Young Nepalese Engineer Award, Mahendra Bidhya Bhusan, Kulratna Gold Medal, and Trofimenkoff Academic Achievement Award among others.
He worked as a computer scientist for the US based company Raytheon BBN technologies. He holds a Ph.D. in computer science.
Raut is the founding president of the Non-Resident Madhesi Association, a global diaspora organisation of Nepalese people of Madhesi ethnic group living abroad. He is also the founder of the injot movement, a social transformation initiative targeted at Nepal, Ethiopia,and Bangladesh. He was arrested on September 14, 2014 on a charge of causing public disorder while addressing a gathering of the Santhal community. There are several debates regarding the voice of CK Raut for free Madhesh. In Bethari, a local village market of Rupandehi, district, the security forces opened firing and killd dozens of innocent villagers on 15 Sep 2014 (http://kathmandupost.ekantipur.com/news/2015-09-17/bethari-bazaar-shooting-security-forces-opened-fire-at-busy-market-place-say-kin-of-victims.html).
