Burari is a census town in North Delhi District in the National Capital Territory of Delhi, India.
There is a Mahabharata-era temple called Khandeswar Mandir dedicated to Shiva. It is a place where Arjuna pray to Shiva before burning the Khandav Prasth (later known as Indraprasth) Van. According to folklore, Krishna came here to graze cows. It was named Murari, which during the Mughal period changed into Burari.
As of the 2011 India census, Burari had a population of 360,182. Males constituted 55% of the population and females 45%. Burari had an average literacy rate of 90,% higher than the national average of 59.5%; with male literacy of 76% and female literacy of 59%. 16% of the population was under 6 years of age.
Nearby are the neighbourhoods of Mukherjee Nagar, Sant Nagar,Bengali colony, Jagatpur, Gtb Nagar, Wazirabad, and Kamla Nagar, and the north campus of Delhi University. It is the village from whence came the freedom fighters Radhey Shyam Tyagi and Shanti Swaroop Tyagi.
Burari comes under North Delhi district and is famous for its 104 yr old Coronation Park, Delhi; the place where Delhi was announced to be the capital of India by British Governor General Irwin. Also it is famous for Delhi's biggest biodiversity area neighbouring to it i.e. "Yamuna Biodiversity Park". It is 0 km from Yamuna river and enclosed by "Grand Trunk Road" from two sides.
The Burari Senior secondary school is situated in the town.
The main road of Burari i.e. Shanti Swaroop Tyagi Marg is connecting people of North Delhi to Northwest Delhi, from Burari crossing on Grand Trunk Road to straight away ends at Alipur road National Highway 1 near Splash Water Park
