Biete or Biate is one of the oldest languages in India. The speakers of the language are known as Biate and are spread over many parts of North east India. However, the majority of Biate speaking population today is concentrated in the districts of Dima Hasao (formerly North Cachar) and Cachar in Assam and East Jaintia Hills and West Jaintia Hills districts in Meghalaya. Speakers are also found in small pockets in Manipur, Mizoram and Tripura.According to the 2001 census of India there were 20,000 speakers of the language in the Jaintia Hills district of Meghalaya.
