Belmont is one of three railroad stations on Chicago Metra's BNSF Railway Line in the unincorporated area of Belmont, Illinois. The station is on Belmont Road 22.9 miles (36.9 km) from Union Station, the east end of the line.
Like Downers Grove Main Street Belmont has connections to both Pace Buses, and the Village's own Grove Commuter Shuttle. Unlike the stations at Main Street and Fairview Avenue however, Belmont has parking vendors.
On August 10, 2001, 25-year-old Kristy Fujii fainted due to heat exhaustion, and fell onto the tracks as an oncoming train was approaching. The engineer immediately noticed Fujii and applied the train's emergency break system. The first train car ran over her body, lacerating her pelvis and liver. Luckily, a bystander was able to move her body moments before she was run over, so the train's wheels would avoid crushing her head. Fujii was trapped under the train for another 30 minutes before rescuers could free her. She survived, but required several surgeries.
The station underwent major renovations in the late 2000s. In order to reduce level crossing accidents, an underpass was installed. Belmont Road was re-routed underneath the tracks. Demolition began in late 2008, construction started in 2010, and the new underpass and pedestrian tunnel opened in 2012. The $60 million project was funded by Metra, BNSF, DuPage County, and the State of Illinois.
