Bates City is a city in Lafayette County, Missouri, United States. The population was 219 at the 2010 census.
Bates City was laid out in 1878 by Theodore Bates, and named for him. A post office called Bates City has been in operation since 1879.
Bates City is located at 39°0′11″N 94°4′7″W / 39.00306°N 94.06861°W (39.003191, -94.068739).
According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 1.12 square miles (2.90 km2), of which, 1.07 square miles (2.77 km2) is land and 0.05 square miles (0.13 km2) is water.
The community is located east of Kansas City on Interstate 70 and U.S. Route 40.
As of the census of 2010, there were 219 people, 80 households, and 62 families residing in the city. The population density was 204.7 inhabitants per square mile (79.0/km2). There were 98 housing units at an average density of 91.6 per square mile (35.4/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 97.7% White, 0.5% Pacific Islander, 1.4% from other races, and 0.5% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.8% of the population.
