Balaghat is a city and a municipality in Balaghat district in the state of Madhya Pradesh, India. It is the administrative headquarters of Balaghat District. The town was originally called "Burha" or "बूढा", but this name was replaced by "Balaghat", which was originally the name of the district only. Balaghat means "above the ghats or passes."
Balaghat is located at 21°48′N 80°11′E / 21.800°N 80.183°E. It has an average elevation of 288 metres (944 feet).
This is separated in north by Bamhni Banjar valley from Mandla and Dindori Districts, in the east by Maikal range from Chhattisgarh i.e. Rajnandgaon , Durg and Kabirdham districts, in the west from Seoni District and separated in south by Bagh river and Wainganga River from Gondia, Bhandara and Nagpur districts.
As of 2011[update] India census, Balaghat had a population of 84,216. Males constitute 51% of the population and females 49%. 11% of the population is under 6 years of age. A river, Wainganga flows beside the town.
