Badhiphul

The Badhiphul are a Hindu caste found in the state of Uttar Pradesh in India.

The Badhiphul are an occupational Hindu caste, traditionally involved in metallurgy and carpentry. Little is known of their origin, but they are likely to be a sub-group within the Barhai community, which took to specialising in carving and modelling wooden objects. They are concentrated in western Uttar Pradesh, and speak the Khari boli dialect of Hindu.

The Badhiphul are strictly endogamous community, and are divided into five sub-groups, known as gotras. Their main gotras are the Golewal, Dhiman and Jaskalyan. Marriages are forbidden within the gotra, and like other Hindu communities, they practice clan exogamy.

The Badhipul are still involved in metallurgy and carpentry, with animal husbandry and market gardening being important subsidiary occupations. They often are still dependent on patrons who tend to belong to the locally dominant caste, often Jats and Rajputs. Each of their settlement also contains an informal caste council known as a panchayat, which acts as an instrument of social control, as well as welfare organization.
