The BMW N62 is a V8 DOHC piston engine which replaced the M62 and was produced from 2002–2010. Compared with its M62 predecessor, it features variable valve timing for both the inlet and exhaust camshafts (called double-VANOS by BMW) and variable valve lift (called valvetronic by BMW). Like the M62, it has 4 valves per cylinder and fracture-split forged powdered metal connecting rods.

The N62 did not have a high-performance derivative, unlike the preceding M62 and succeeding N63. Instead, BMW produced the S85 V10 for the E60 M5 and E63 M6, and the S65 V8 for the E90 M3 being derived from the S85.

In the International Engine of the Year awards in 2002, the N62 won overall as well as claiming the "Best New Engine" and "Above 4-litre" categories.

The N62B36 is a 3,600 cc (220 cu in) version producing 200 kW (270 hp) at 6200 rpm and 360 N·m (270 lb·ft) at 3700 rpm.Bore is 84 mm and stroke is 81.2 mm.

Applications:

The N62B40 is a 4,000 cc (244 cu in) version producing 225 kW (302 hp) at 6300 rpm and 390 N·m (290 lb·ft) at 3500 rpm.Bore is 87 mm and stroke is 84.1 mm.

Applications:

The N62B44 is a 4,398 cc (268 cu in) version. Bore is 92 mm and stroke is 82.7 mm. Except for in the X5, it produces 245 kW (329 hp) at 6100 rpm and 450 N·m (330 lb·ft) at 3600 rpm.
