B.J. Medical College, Pune (BJMC) is one of the premier medical institutions in Maharashtra and India. The college, administered by the Government of Maharashtra, comprises clinical and para/pre-clinical departments working alongside the Sassoon General Hospitals. The B.J. Medical School was started in 1878 and was converted to full-fledged B.J. Medical College in 1946. It has consistently ranked among the top 10 medical colleges in India for several years.
BJ Medical College and the allied Sassoon General Hospitals are near Pune Railway Station, in a busy area of the city. B J medical college is just five minutes of walk from Pune central railway station.
The hospital serves the needs of patients from urban and rural Pune. It is also a major referral centre for many of the surrounding districts. The hospital has state-of-the-art facilities in medical specialities including a cardiac catheterization laboratory, CT imaging, Upper gastrointestinal tract endoscopy etc. Weekly clinics are run for medical and surgical super-specialties. Due to large patient load and limited resources, rush is the only problem. It stands as much better option for poor and deprived from society.
The college has an illustrious past and many alumni have excelled in medicine (in India and abroad) as well as in arts (drama, literature, cinema) and politics.
Mahatma Gandhi was operated for acute appendicitis in this hospital.http://www.bjmcpune.org/gandhiji.htm
