Assens is a municipality in the district of Gros-de-Vaud in the canton of Vaud in Switzerland.
Assens is first mentioned in 1228 as Ascens.
The community decided to merge their commune with Malapalud, with effect from 1 January 2009.
Assens has an area, as of 2009[update], of 5.35 square kilometers (2.07 sq mi). Of this area, 4.23 km2 (1.63 sq mi) or 79.1% is used for agricultural purposes, while 0.59 km2 (0.23 sq mi) or 11.0% is forested. Of the rest of the land, 0.48 km2 (0.19 sq mi) or 9.0% is settled (buildings or roads), 0.01 km2 (2.5 acres) or 0.2% is either rivers or lakes.
Of the built up area, housing and buildings made up 4.7% and transportation infrastructure made up 3.2%. Out of the forested land, all of the forested land area is covered with heavy forests. Of the agricultural land, 66.5% is used for growing crops and 11.0% is pastures, while 1.5% is used for orchards or vine crops. All the water in the municipality is flowing water.
The municipality was part of the Échallens District until it was dissolved on 31 August 2006, and Assens became part of the new district of Gros-de-Vaud.
The municipality is located on the Lausanne-Échallens street. On 1 January 2009 the former municipality of Malapalud merged into the municipality of Assens, which kept the name Assens.
The blazon of the municipal coat of arms is Vert, in base a Garb, in chief two Crosses bottony, all of Or.
Assens has a population (as of December 2015[update]) of 1,031. As of 2008[update], 10.3% of the population are resident foreign nationals. Over the last 10 years (1999–2009 ) the population has changed at a rate of 25.4%. It has changed at a rate of 16.7% due to migration and at a rate of 8.7% due to births and deaths.
