It established rifle ranges, a training depot and 'encampment' for the Brigade of Guards here. Many of the current buildings date to the 1950s with significant extension to buildings in the 1970s. There are separate barracks in the complex, Alexander Barracks is the home of the Army Training Regiment, Pirbright,Elizabeth Barracks is the base of 1st Battalion the Welsh Guards, whilst Household Division and Parachute Regiment Centralized Courses (HDPRCC) is at Brunswick Lines.

The ATC provides basic training for all recruits for the Army Air Corps, the Royal Regiment of Artillery, Royal Corps of Signals, the Royal Logistic Corps, the Adjutant General's Corps, the Royal Army Medical Corps, the Royal Engineers, the Royal Armoured Corps and the Intelligence Corps.
